A Still-Life and a Portrait

For the last months of summer and for the beginning months of autumn, I have been working on two different oil paintings which create a contrast between form and atmosphere. Using many passes of relatively thick paint, the objects acquire a rhythm to them. Considering the negative space brings both harmony and chaos to the composition. I have been working towards actualizing refined observation through tactile markings with the hope of building emotionally moving paintings.

The Florence Academy of Art

This past April and May, I traveled to Italy to work in an intensive painting program at the renowned Florence Academy of Art.

The courses were conducted by the realist painter Jura Bedic, a principal instructor who began mastering his technique in Florence at the young age of 18 years. Jura believes a work of art must offer the textures, colors, and tones to one’s eyes to become something more than just an illusion. He truly is a master painter and I was quite lucky to have his tutelage.

Moving forward as an artist in the world will always be a constant goal. The experience I had at the academy changed me. I now work with more increased observation, looking for the subtle aspects of form and space, creating paintings which access deeper sensitivity.

Printmaking in the Sun

During the first months of 2016, I spent most of my studio time learning solarplate printmaking.

A technique created by Dan Welden in the late 1960s, it has been used by many artists around the world to create etchings using the sun to expose their images. Though there are quite a bit of different versions of this fabulous technique, the process basically consists of creating a piece of artwork on translucent film, overlaying it onto a light sensitive polymer plate, exposing the image under ultraviolet light, washing out the soluble areas left on the plate by softly scrubbing them out in water, and then finally printing the image. It may have just as many steps as traditional intaglio techniques but it does not have the toxic chemicals which must be managed when using acid washes.

I am pleased to include these four solarplate intaglio prints in the upcoming 36th Annual Mini Print International Exhibition in Cadaqués, Spain. Artists from 50 countries and all continents will be represented in this wonderful exhibition which showcases all forms of printmaking.

Works in Progress

Using a method of layering color with gel medium, I hope to create images with a sense of emotional illumination.

As the figures come to life, the days spent in my studio bring meaning and happiness.

Sending you wishes of light and joy for the holiday season and a wondrous new year ahead!

New works in a high key pallete.

After traveling for months, I feel a sense of urgency to work!

Here is the first underpainting to commence a series of figures which I hope illuminate and enlighten the end of 2015.

By depicting the human form in lightness, I intend for a truth to be found deep within the paintings.

Enter Into Art, 2015/2016, Cologne, Germany

Last month, I was invited to be a selected artist in an intercultural art installation titled, Enter Into Art. Curated by Gabriele Walter and Kurt Ries, this small-scale artworks exhibition will take place beginning August 16th, 2015 in Cologne, Germany and travel throughout other regions of the country in 2016. Though the imagery was not specified, the concept was to create art within fine shades utilizing only one hue. My recently produced portrait paintings became visual studies for me to develop these three paintings for the show.
This fascinating exhibit opens at the Cultural Center, Cologne-Mühlheim, Germany.

Samburu Village, Kenya

In 2012, while visiting the Samburu villages of Kenya for the first time, I was struck by how content and loving the women and children were towards each other, towards me as a visitor, and with their simple life in the Rift Valley Province. The vibrant colors of their hand-beaded jewelry beautify their already stunning appearance. Children run, laugh, and are incredibly curious and free. A much more traditional people than the Masaai, the Samburu have long been an independent and egalitarian society. They relocate every 5 to 6 weeks to ensure their cattle can feed themselves.

I captured these lovely Samburu women enjoying a moment of repose. My etching of the little boy seated in his mother’s arms was included in the exhibition of the 33rd Mini Print International de Cadaqués, Barcelona, Spain.

Essaouira, Morocco

On the coast of Morocco there is a peaceful and powerful city named Essaouira. It is filled with magical spirits and my senses became fully alive while I walked and felt the winds whip up off the sea. A Canary Current aides the locals creating a fishery by the southward movement of the ocean. It has long been considered one of the best anchorages of the Moroccan shoreline.

I photographed and then eventually etched one of the many hardworking and devoted fisherman from this breathtaking city.

The etching was published in the exhibition catalogue and included in the 33rd Mini Print International de Cadaqués, Barcelona, Spain.

Marrakech, Morocco

The Old Medina of Marrakech is filled with excitement and energy.  The awareness of sights, sounds, touch, tastes, and smells is fascinating and overwhelming almost all at once. A respite within it’s souks is vital. This kind Berber gentleman brought me some delicious tangerines and sweet mint tea to a table with a view of the wondrous surroundings before me.

My etching was included in the exhibition of the 33rd Mini Print International de Cadaqués, Barcelona, Spain.

Patagonia, Chile

At the end of the world, there is beauty everywhere.
A mythic, far away land with a history of inhabitants dating back 8000 years, Patagonia is surrounded by great natural barriers, the sea, the mountains and ice fields.
My journey there last month was one filled with exploration and wonder.
It lead me to reflect upon the color ways of my art and how much I include the hues of the natural world in my figurative works.
